Famous All over Town Book ¾ PaperbackDownload ´ Danny santiago Famous All over TownI read this when it first came out in 1983 and I remember the controversy that developed when the author was revealed to be a white guy not a Chicano as his pseudonym indicated Now I am living in Lincoln Heights with a giant graffiti courtesy of the Clovers on the intersection in front of my house This is Chato's turf just blocks away from where he lived and roamed the streets The geography definitely rings true and the depiction of a fourteen year old boy from the barrio works for the most part I was less convinced by the other supporting characters whose personas are fairy stereotypical

Famous All over Town Book ¾ PaperbackDownload ´ Danny santiago Famous All over TownI read this for a class I think it's a good book but not a great one The fact that the author's name is fake so that an old white dude could pretend it was written by a Chicano author does in fact take away from the book I don't blame him for doing it because I know he was a writer working with Chicano youths who had a good idea for a book but knew it would be taken seriously if it was actually written by someone from the ethinic group he was writing about What was he supposed to do throw his idea away? No I'd say he should have just been honest He should have used his real name and let people take or leave the book accordingly At the same time since he was a man who had been blacklisted from Hollywood during the McCarthy era and written notable works using pseudonyms I also can understand why he'd be like Well fuck everyone I'll keep using a pseudonym to my benefit In any case even if the author had been honest it would still only be a pretty good but n

Famous All over Town Book ¾ PaperbackDownload ´ Danny santiago Famous All over TownI really enjoyed this book It's a great narrative voice this fourteen year old on the precipice of either getting out of the barrio or succumbing to it You are sympathetic even when he is making wrong decisions and you never lose sight of the fact that he's just a kid The environment Santiago creates is vivid and you understand how Chato can love this blighted street I especially loved the illustration of Chicano life in the early 80s the importance of family the sexual po

Famous All over Town Book ¾ PaperbackDownload ´ Danny santiago Famous All over TownI grabbed this book off my boyfriend's bookshelf He read it in a cultural literature class and I'm surprised he kept it so long because he said it was terrible I needed something to read so I gave it a go and was pleasantly surprised It depicts the life of a young Mexican boy his family and neighborhood in East LA in the 70s Simply written it shows the highs and lows of Mexican life in the US and in Mexico the relationships between family members their neighbors and rival gangs I found myself rooting for the main character hoping that he'd somehow rise out of the despair around him
